NCSA Junior Nationals: Locals on Day One

The first day of NCSA Junior Nationals is in the books. He’s how the locals did:

Good Counsel freshman Jack Conger, swimming with RMSC, finished sixth in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:13.46 and was the youngest of the top six finishers. Oakton All-Met senior Bradley Phillips, swimming with Curl-Burke, took 17th in the event with a time of 9:23.68, while Curl-Burke’s Serge Gould (Whitman) took 20th with a time of 9:24.45 — knocking 12 seconds off his seed time.

In the men’s 200 medley relay, Curl-Burke’s team of Brad Dillon (South Lakes), Chuck Katis (Langley), James Crabb and Kevin Vest (W.T. Woodson) took second with a time of 1:32.23, just behind Poseidon Swimming’s first-place time of 1:32.18.

RMSC’s team of Jonathan Ekstrom (Georgetown Prep), Andrew Tollefson (Walter Johnson), Chris Verboncoeur (Churchill) and Conger finished fifth with a time of 1:33.36.

Curl-Burke’s ‘B’ Relay of Kyle Tyrrell (Annandale), K.J. Park (Oakton), Nick Tremols (Battlefield) and Ryan Dunne (Brentsville) finished eighth in 1:33.99.

RMSC’s ‘B’ relay of Eric Conrad (Sherwood), Eric Ruggieri (Blair), Cameron Lancon (Blake) and Josh Heller (Magruder) finished in 18th with a time of 1:35.83.

In the women’s 1000 freestyle, RMSC’s Katie Rogers (Holy Cross) was the top local finisher in an event dominated by NOVA of Virginia, taking ninth place with a time of 9:58.39 — 13 seconds better than her seed time.

In the women’s 200 medley relay, Curl-Burke’s relay of Janet Hu, Courtney Mizerak (Osbourn Park), Kaitlin Pawlowicz (Oakton) and Taylor Vincent (Gar-Field) were sixth with a time of 1:43.93. RMSC’s team of Cara Chuang (Poolesville), Sarah Haase (Good Counsel), Alicia Watkins (Churchill) and Emily Ryczek (Sherwood) finished just behind in seventh with a time of 1:44.22.

Today’s events are the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle relay. Some notable top seeds after prelims for the 100 free and 100 breast include Katis, who is seeded first in the 100 breast, Park (4th, 100 breast), Arlington Aquatic’s Jake Huston (Washington-Lee), 8th in the 100 breast.
